Differences Between Short-Term and Long-Term Visas: What You Should Know
Are you planning to employ foreign workers or considering staying in the Czech Republic yourself? The decision between a short-term and long-term visa is crucial – it affects the duration of stay, work opportunities, and administrative obligations.
In this article, we will show you the main differences between both types of visas, legislative requirements, and practical advice on how to navigate the process without getting lost.
1. What is a short-term visa and who is it intended for?
A short-term visa (Type C) allows foreigners to stay in the Czech Republic and other Schengen Area countries for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.
This type of visa is suitable for those who are heading to the Czech Republic for a limited period and do not plan to stay long-term.
✅ When is a short-term visa the right choice?
- Short-term business trips (such as seasonal work or participation in training).
- Business meetings.
- Tourism or visiting family and friends.
- Short-term medical treatment.
2. What is a long-term visa and when do you need it?
A long-term visa (Type D) is intended for individuals planning to stay in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days. This type of visa is granted for 6 to 12 months, with the possibility of further extension or transition to long-term residency.
✅ When is a long-term visa necessary?
- Employment or business in the Czech Republic.
- Study lasting longer than three months.
- Family reunification (if one family member already has residence rights).
- Humanitarian or other specific purposes.
3. Key differences in the application process
🟢 Application submission
- Short-term visa: The application is submitted at the relevant Czech consulate in the country where the applicant has permanent residence.
- Long-term visa: Similar to the short-term visa, the application is submitted at the consulate, but the administrative process is more complex and involves additional documents.
🟢 Processing time
- Short-term visa: The standard processing time is 15 calendar days, and in more complex cases, it can take up to 45 days.
- Long-term visa: The process usually takes 60–90 days, but in some cases, it may take longer.
🟢 Required documents
Although specific requirements vary depending on the purpose of stay, the following generally applies:
For a short-term visa:
- Completed visa application form.
- Valid passport (at least 3 months after return).
- Proof of the purpose of stay (invitation, employment contract, etc.).
- Travel insurance.
- Proof of accommodation.
For a long-term visa:
- Completed long-term visa application form.
- Passport (valid for at least 3 months after the end of the stay).
- Proof of the purpose of stay (employment contract, confirmation of study, etc.).
- Proof of accommodation.
- Criminal record extract from the country of origin.
- Travel health insurance for the entire stay.

4. Most common mistakes when applying for a visa
❌ Incomplete documentation – Missing attachments can significantly delay the process or lead to rejection.
❌ Incorrect type of visa – Choosing the wrong visa type between short-term and long-term visas can cause complications with extending your stay.
❌ Late application submission – It is recommended to apply well in advance (at least 3 months before the planned arrival).
