Adaptation and Integration Courses in the Czech Republic: What You Need to Know and How DMPF Expat Assistant Can Help
Moving to a new country is always a challenge – and the Czech Republic is no exception. Legal regulations, the job market, the education system, and healthcare can be complex even for locals, let alone for foreigners starting a new life here.
To make integration easier, the Czech state has introduced adaptation and integration courses (AIK) to help third-country nationals understand the legal and social environment. Since 2021, these courses have been mandatory for most foreigners who obtain long-term or permanent residence. In this article, we will look at how AIK works, who is required to take them, and how DMPF Expat Assistant can help you with them.
Who needs to attend the adaptation and integration course?
The adaptation-integration course is mandatory for third-country nationals who have obtained long-term or permanent residence after January 1, 2021. On the other hand, EU citizens, their family members, or, for example, students on long-term study visas do not have this obligation.
✅ The course must be completed by, for example:
- Foreigners from non-EU countries who have obtained a long-term residence permit (e.g. for work, business, family reunification).
- Foreigners with permanent residence granted after January 1, 2021.
❌ The course is not required for:
- EU citizens and their family members.
- Holders of long-term residence permits for the purpose of **studies**.
- Foreigners with temporary protection or international protection.
- Investors and highly skilled workers under the blue card scheme.
Not sure if this obligation applies to you? Contact DMPF Expat Assistant and we will find out for you.
What will you learn in the course?
What will you learn in the course?
The adaptation and integration course lasts approximately 4 hours and takes place at approved centers in regional cities. Its main goal is to provide foreigners with practical information about life in the Czech Republic and their rights and obligations.
The topics covered by the course include:
- Basic information about the Czech Republic – how the state functions, important contact points.
- Residence legislation – how to extend visas, conditions of stay.
- Work and business – employment contracts, social security, taxes.
- Healthcare system – public and private insurance, registration with a doctor.
- Education – kindergartens, schools, universities, and retraining programs.
- Housing – rental agreements, tenant rights.
The course is available in various languages (English, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, etc.), so you don't need to worry if you don't speak Czech yet.
How to register for the course and how much does it cost?
Registration: You can register online through the Ministry of the Interior's portal or at the Center for Support of Integration of Foreigners. If you are unsure about the process, DMPF Expat Assistant will handle it for you.
Course fee: 1,500 CZK (foreigners pay for it themselves).
By when must I complete the course? By 1 year from receiving the residence permit. Failure to do so may result in a fine of up to 10,000 CZK!
